Rachael and George: racing's breakout world stars half a century apart
For a racing figure to make an impact in the wider world of sport, as Rachael Blackmore did last year, is a rare achievement. So rare, in fact, that when Blackmore was named the BBC's World Sport Star of the Year for 2021, she was only the second from racing to receive the accolade. For the first, we have to rewind more than half a century to 1967.
That was the year George Moore, for many the greatest Australian jockey of all time, took British Flat racing by storm, landing the first three Classics and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Busted.
Moore, who is credited with a record 119 Group 1 winners in Australia, rode in Britain at the request of leading Newmarket trainer Sir Noel Murless, and the pair soon teamed up to take the 2,000 Guineas with Royal Palace, followed the next day by the 1,000 Guineas with Fleet, who would go on to land the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
