I was very sad to read of the death of Padge Berry last week. He and his wife Carmel became friends early in my late husband David’s training career and he was our introduction to buying horses in Ireland.

He was the most honourable man to buy from and we would go over every autumn to view the latest collection of young horses housed at his two farms on the coast of Wexford, seeing mostly yearlings, two-year-olds and three-year-olds running in and out of barns in bunches of 15 or 20.

On one occasion we were there in September in the early 1970s and David took a shine to a big, leggy two-year-old who made the running around a huge pasture at the head of about 15 horses of the same age.
