Hoping for some memorable clashes after a few near-misses
Insight every Saturday from the award-winning commentator
With York just around the corner the weekend cards have a slightly low key feel to them. There are only so many good horses to go around and for one reason or another, especially in the middle- distance division, the most intriguing clashes have not yet materialised this season.
So Mi Dar’s setback removed her from an Oaks clash with Minding, US Army Ranger missed a rematch with Harzand in the Irish Derby, while Postponed’s absence from the King George (along with his pacemaker) turned the race into a messy tactical affair.
Hopefully the Juddmonte International next week will provide an opportunity for Postponed to be tested by a younger rival in Hawkbill, who from an unpromising debut has progressed with every run to become the Godolphin flag-bearer this season. With any luck, this is one clash that will actually take place and act as the precursor for a few more before the season's end.
