A brief foray in the commentary box highlights the talent of the professionals
On Saturday I became a racecaller on the Rowley Mile, describing horses racing past the Bushes, into the Dip and then past the line. It was a marvellous experience, raised money for some wonderful charities and shone an indirect light on the enormous talent within Britain's professional commentary roster.
Commentating has always been an art that has fascinated me, perhaps not surprisingly given Sir Peter O'Sullevan was one of my racing idols.
When executed at the highest level, a commentator can enhance the enjoyment of great sport. Sometimes a piece of commentary can become almost as famous as the sporting event itself, O'Sullevan's soundtracks to Red Rum's third Grand National and the Gold Cups won by Dawn Run and Desert Orchid being good examples.
