Mystery Power followed up a smart debut victory by battling to deny fellow maiden scorer Juan Elcano by a length under Oisin Murphy in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.

Maxi Boy, who was bringing Coventry Stakes form to the table after finishing eighth at Royal Ascot, was three and a quarter lengths behind in third.

Key market principals, Godolphin's once-raced winner King's Command and Year Of The Tiger, who finished seventh in the Chesham Stakes for Aidan O'Brien, were unable to quicken as the race developed and finished out of the frame.

Murphy said of the Richard Hannon-trained winner: "He's a super, tough, professional horse and Richard Hannon's string are in great order. It's nice to step in for Silvestre [de Sousa] on a day like today.

"I've had a lot of success with Richard and Mystery Power is an exciting horse. He's a typical No Nay Never. He got seven furlongs very easily here but he's not a slow horse. A mile will be in his compass."

The display prompted Paddy Power and Betfair to introduce the winner at 20-1 for the 2,000 Guineas.
