Suesa sparks Ascot dreams for Rohaut and Peslier as Ubettabelieveit disappoints
There was bitter disappointment for the Nigel Tinkler-trained Ubettabelieveit, who trailed in a long last in the Group 3 Prix Sigy on his first appearance since chasing home Golden Pal at last year's Breeders' Cup.
While an explanation may yet surface for the favourite's lacklustre display – jockey Rowan Scott told the Chantilly stewards that Ubettabelievit was beaten a long way out – Suesa waltzed to a three-and-a-half-length success under Olivier Peslier in the style of a filly with a big future.
Carrying the colours of George Strawbridge for the first time since being bought out of Carlos Laffon-Parias' yard, the daughter of Night Of Thunder will now come under serious consideration for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
Trainer Francois Rohaut won this race when it was last run two years ago with Big Brothers Pride as well as with future Group 1 winner Signs Of Blessing.
Suesa arrived in Pau in January and Rohaut said: "That was surprising and while you are always hopeful, you never expect a demonstration like that. Carlos has done all the work and it's wonderful to receive a filly like her so I'll try to continue what he has started."
Neither Rohaut nor Strawbridge is a stranger to Ascot and while there will be conversations to be had involving the two men and racing manager James Wigan, Suesa looks well up to the task.
"The Commonwealth Cup will certainly come into discussion and personally, given we know she runs well fresh and I would have no fear about the 1,200 metres [six furlongs], so it would be great to go straight to Ascot if everyone is in agreement.
"Everyone dreams of having an Ascot horse and if you have one capable of going there, there is a lot of fun to be had working towards that goal."
