Soqrat gives Mike de Kock his fifth Cape Guineas at Kenilworth
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Soqrat, ridden by Randall Simons, gave South Africa’s eight-time champion trainer Mike de Kock his fifth Cape Guineas at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Simons, who was riding his first winner in Cape Town, sent the 9-2 chance for home just under a furlong out and had no problem holding off Twist Of Fate by a length and a quarter, with favourite One World a further half a length away in third.
Simons said: "I thought I would be under pressure behind Anton Marcus on One World but not a bit of it. I was always going well."
Matthew de Kock, assistant to his father, said the three-year-old will stay in Cape Town for the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate on January 5.
Recognised as South Africa's most prestigious mile race, entries for the Queen's Plate closed on Friday, but as only seven were entered the closing date was deferred until Tuesday.
Trainer Vaughan Marshall would offer no excuses for One World, saying: "He had every chance."
Former England cricketer Craig Kieswetter and his family had their first Classic winner when Front And Centre, trained by Brett Crawford, stormed home in the World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas, comfortably holding off Silvano’s Pride and the favourite Clouds Unfold.
Kieswetter’s father Wayne, who has has poured a considerable amount of money into bloodstock in South Africa, said: "Winning a Classic is the pinnacle and is what we are in breeding for."
His Scottish-born wife Belinda added: "This is like winning a gold medal at the Olympics."
