It's a Botti benefit: Thunderman wins battle of trainer's team in Federico Tesio

Alduino Botti: cleaned up at Capannelle on Sunday

Saddling a 1-2-3-4 in a Group 2 worth over £100,000 in prize-money is the sort of achievement every trainer dreams of, but Italian handler Alduino Botti completed the feat in rather unusual circumstances at Capannelle on Sunday when Thunderman struck in the Premio Federico Tesio.

Botti snr – father of fellow trainers Marco and Stefano, and uncle to Alessandro and Endo – was responsible for all four runners in the 1m3f contest, guaranteeing himself a spot in the winner's enclosure.

Thunderman, ridden by eight-time Italian champion jockey Dario Vargiu and now a three-time Group 2 winner at Capannelle, got the better of his stablemates, leading home runner-up Baptism with fellow familiar faces Fambrus and Blue Sky Dreamer not far behind in a tight finish.

It is a race that has been particularly kind to the Botti family over recent years. Stefano won the Federico Tesio six times in seven years between 2011 and 2017, and indeed came close to a clean sweep of his own in 2017 when he had four of the five runners.

Thunderman's success was also Alduino's second having triumphed with Chestnut Honey two years ago.

Alduino is no stranger to an uncompetitive Group race after he trained five of the six runners in the Group 1 Oaks d'Italia in 1981 and his brother-in-law, Gabrielle Miliani, trained the other. Botti's horses finished 1-2-3-4-6.

Closer to home in Ireland, Willie Mullins had the first four finishers in a five-runner field in the 2013 running of the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle won by Hurricane Fly.

Botti's domination continued later on the card where he saddled six of the 12 runners in the Premio Del Piazzale Mem Enrico Camici.
