Charlie Appleby and Frankie Dettori chase more Canadian riches at Woodbine
Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby bids for a second success in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes (10.06) at Woodbine on Sunday evening, when Sweet Solera runner-up Wild Beauty faces nine rivals.
Appleby, who for the second day in succession teams up with Frankie Dettori in Canada, the duo having won Saturday's Canadian International with Walton Street, landed the mile turf contest for juvenile fillies in 2018 with La Pelosa.
Like Wild Beauty, she graduated to the race having finished second in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes.
Also runner-up in Sandown's Listed Star Stakes, Wild Beauty has winning form to her name at Haydock and Newbury this season and is the most experienced in the field.
Appleby said: “We have been delighted with Wild Beauty going into this race. She has some rock-solid European form and I feel the step up to a mile is going to play to her strengths.”
Locally-based Mark Casse saddles four runners as he bids for a record eighth success in the race, including Diabolic, who is unbeaten in three starts and won the Listed Catch A Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine last month.
On the same card, Appleby seeks a first win in another of Canada's top two-year-old races with Listed Stonehenge Stakes winner Albahr attempting top-level success in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes (10.39) over a mile.
Also partnered by Dettori, Albahr will try to stretch his unbeaten run to four and faces eight rivals, including fellow Godolphin challenger Degree Of Risk, trained by Eoin Harty.
Appleby said: “Albahr brings some good experience into the Summer Stakes, having won his last three starts, including a battling display at Salisbury. He gets a mile well and the style of racing in Canada is going to suit.”
Degree Of Risk was second in the Listed Soaring Free Stakes over six and a half furlongs at Woodbine last time, with the step up to a mile unlikely to inconvenience, according to his trainer.
Harty said: “He ran a very good race in the Soaring Free, when he was a little immature and probably could have won if he had run straight. I’m putting some cheekpieces on him this time and don’t think a mile will be a problem.”
There is also British interest at Belmont Park in the United States on Sunday, when William Haggas teams up with John Velazquez with Spirit Of Bermuda, who goes for the Listed Pebbles Stakes (10.16) for three-year-old fillies over a mile.
