It has been quite a few days for Helena Springfield Ltd – and it could be about to get even better.

The highly successful racing and breeding operation, whose One So Wonderful won the Juddmonte International here in 1998, unveiled a genuine Classic contender when Anapurna won the Lingfield Oaks Trial last Saturday.

Just 24 hours earlier Twist 'N' Shake had bolted up in a maiden at Nottingham, doing it in such style that she steps up to Listed company here just seven days later.

"It was only a maiden at Nottingham, but she came from a difficult draw and handled it well," trainer John Gosden said of the filly who has an entry in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

"Apart from the journey to and from the track it was only like a piece of work.

"She is a sweet, neat little filly. I don't normally bring horses back so quickly, but she won comfortably and seemed to enjoy herself, plus she belongs to an owner-breeder and this is a black-type race.

"There aren't many races like this around, it's good of York to put it on and it needs supporting."

Joy returns to York

Mark Johnston hopes that Natalie's Joy can pick up where she left off on her return from 301 days out of action.

The filly has looked potentially high class in the first half of last season, trotting up on her debut then bouncing back from a disappointing effort when hot favourite for the Chesham Stakes to land a 6f Listed event at Newbury.

That was her last appearance, and the trainer said: "She's been off quite a long time and we're not absolutely sure about stepping up from six furlongs to a mile.

"She's very fast and I'd probably rather have gone over seven first time back. She was in over seven at Newmarket, but we thought this looked easier so we've come here and I hope we're right.

"She's been working well at home and we just hope she can take up where she left off."

What they say

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Khalid Abdullah, owner of Clerisy
It's taken a little while for the penny to drop, but in the race at Newmarket, once Ryan [Moore] got her rolling she kept finding. She'd always shown a bit at home and we've liked her, but it was a question of putting it on the racecourse. This will be another step up for her.

Karl Burke, trainer of Divinity
I wouldn't want the ground to get quicker than good for Divinity, although I'll probably run her whatever the conditions. She's come out of her win at Ripon really well and is a lot fitter now so she should show up well.

Simon Crisford, trainer of El Gumryah
We're very happy with how she's trained since she won at Kempton, but this is obviously a step up for her.

Ralph Beckett, trainer of Glance
She's in good shape and this is the right place to start her. I'm looking forward to stepping her up to a mile and the flat track should suit her. She's by Dansili and the ground shouldn't be a problem.

Roger Varian, trainer of Invitational and Impulsion
Invitational is a nice filly and unexposed. She's won her last two races well and steps up in trip, which I think she'll get fine on this ground. Without a doubt she's progressive and we'll learn more about her, but she deserves a go at this level. Impulsion has not had a lot of luck in her recent races. We're stepping her up in class and trip too, but I think she can handle it and I hope she has things go her way a bit more this time around.
