Frankuus back from the brink and looking to spark a revival

3.00 Chester
Boodles Diamond Handicap | 1m2½f | 4yo+ | ITV4/Sky

Back in the summer of 2016, Frankuus was one of Frankel's first winners as a sire and although he has gone on to strike twice at Group 3 level, his journey to this point has not been without the odd hitch.

Frankuus moved to David O'Meara from Mark Johnston last year, with a spell out of training in between, but showed signs of a revival when second at Ripon on his first start of the season last month.

The rain at Chester should only enhance his chance and his draw in two should aid his attacking style.

O'Meara, who has won with all three of his runners at the May meeting this week, said: "We were very happy with his first run back at Ripon and it was pleasing to see him show a genuine attitude.

"Dropping back in trip on softer ground and going left-handed will suit him and as he's a forward going horse, hopefully he'll break well and get a good position."

Restorer returns for repeat bid

Restorer won this race on his seasonal comeback last year and a big run looks on the cards with Ryan Moore booked to ride for the first time.

His task will be harder this time as that victory came off a 6lb lower mark, but having won from a low stall 12 months ago, he has another plum draw in three.

Trainer Ian Williams said: "He's very well drawn and in a good position to repeat last year's win in the race."

Williams and owner Marwan Koukash could also be represented by Gossip Column, who ran in the concluding 1m2½f handicap on Thursday.

"We will see where we are with Gossip Column after he has run today," the trainer added.

Market forces a plus for Epaulement

Three of the last four favourites have won this race which could be a positive trend for Epaulement.

Tom Dascombe has had a huge team running this week but not many have as exciting a profile as Epaulement, who looked firmly on the upgrade when winning at Ripon last month.

However, the trainer is concerned about the suitability of the rain-softened conditions.

"I'm slightly worried about the ground, he ran on soft once before and ran awfully," he said. "He won well last time at Ripon and is going the right way, I'm sure he can win again but my concern is the ground."

Dascombe also runs Finniston Farm and said: "He didn't really turn out to be the horse we thought he was, but he ran well at Doncaster the other day when he may just have needed the run, and has a chance off 96."

What they say

Tim Easterby, trainer of Aasheq
He's been a revelation, he's definitely improved again and ran a blinder at Epsom last time.

Andrew Balding, trainer of Genetics
It's his first run of the year and he's in good form. I'm slightly concerned about the softer ground for him.

Mick Appleby, trainer of Sputnik Planum
He'll probably just need the run as he's been off for a while but the ground will suit.
