Three jockeys who saluted a narrow 'victory' too soon

Throughout his career Frankie Dettori has delivered many moments that will be remembered for all the right reasons. His actions on Friday in celebrating the 'victory' of Lady Aurelia will also be remembered, although not with fondness by the world's most famous rider. Still, he's not the first, and won't be the last, to be left red-faced by the judge . . .

Richard Hills
Maraahel, 2006 Juddmonte International

Dettori is not even the first to make the mistake in a York Group 1, with Richard Hills having celebrated prematurely on Maraahel in the Juddmonte International. Hills waved his whip in delight but had not bargained with an up-and-coming rider called Ryan Moore, who had nabbed him on the line with Notnowcato.

Greg Hall
Doriemus, 1997 Melbourne Cup

One of the greats in Australia, Greg Hall was all out to reel in Might And Power at Flemington 20 years ago aboard Doriemus, and as the pair flashed past the post together 'The G' thought he had won his second Melbourne Cup. He saluted the huge crowd while standing up in the irons but unfortunately for him it was Might And Power and 'The Pumper' Jim Cassidy who had landed the spoils.

Kevin Shea
Lizard's Desire, 2010 Dubai World Cup

Joy turned to despair for Kevin Shea in the desert seven years ago after he thought he had stolen the world's richest race in the shadow of the post aboard the Mike De Kock-trained Lizard's Desire. Shea's emotional celebrations were triggered when the rider of third-placed Allybar, Ahmed Ajtebi, offered out a hand in congratulations. But Ajtebi had it wrong. The judge took so long to determine this one that Channel 4 Racing had gone off air by the time it was announced Gloria De Campeao had won.
