Wolferton the aim for last year's Irish Derby winner Latrobe
Latrobe, last year’s Irish Derby winner, is more likely to run in the Wolferton Stakes over a mile and a quarter at Royal Ascot on Tuesday rather than wait for the two-furlong longer Hardwicke Stakes on the final day of the meeting.
Joseph O’Brien, trainer of the four-year-old, said on Friday: “I’ll be talking things over with Latrobe’s owners, Lloyd and Nick Williams, before a final decision is made but we’re leaning towards the Wolferton on the basis of maybe not wanting to stretch him in trip at what is still an early stage of the season.”
O’Brien, who rode six Royal Ascot winners, is bidding for a first success at the meeting as a trainer and Buckhurst, runner-up in the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on his most recent start and in the same ownership as Latrobe, also has a choice of engagements next week.
“He’s in the Hampton Court Stakes on Thursday and the King Edward VII Stakes the following day. We haven’t decided which race he’ll go for but we’re favouring the Hampton Court at this stage.”
O’Brien confirmed Master Of Reality, winner of the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan in April, a runner in the Gold Cup while he described Altair, winner of two of her three starts, as "a possible" for the Ribblesdale Stakes.
“We’re looking at running Air Force Jet, who won at Naas, in the Norfolk Stakes and we could have a few runners in handicaps," said O’Brien.
Sheila Lavery, who suffered the loss of her stable star Lady Kaya in a gallops accident on Tuesday, may run her Curragh maiden winner Lil Grey in the Albany Stakes on Friday.
“Some family members had booked to travel from Australia to see Lady Kaya run in the Commonwealth Cup so we’re considering sending Lil Grey for the Albany. If she doesn’t go there we’ll wait for the Railway Stakes at the Curragh the following weekend," said Lavery.
Michael O’Callaghan, another trainer who will be chasing a first winner at the meeting, is planning to have four runners including dual handicap winner I Am Superman who ran his best race when sixth, six lengths behind the winner Phoenix Of Spain, in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
O’Callaghan said: “I Am Superman ran very well in the Irish Guineas. He goes for the Jersey Stakes and on his Curragh run he should have a decent chance.”
Also on O’Callaghan’s team are Queen Mary Stakes candidate Lorelei Rock and Isabeau and Red Epaulette who goes for the Windsor Castle Stakes.
