Who are the trainers and jockeys to follow at Royal Ascot?

Although it will not be a typical Royal Ascot in the current behind-closed-doors climate, some jockeys and trainers have proven themselves as reliable winners at the royal meeting.

Here are a few names to note with the five-day meeting in mind.

Trainers

Aidan O'Brien

In the last five Royal Ascots, no trainer has got close to matching the haul of winners trained by Aidan O'Brien.

O'Brien has had 27 winners from 185 runners in that timeframe, 15 more than the next best trainer, with seven of those winners coming in Group 1 company.

O'Brien's runners have also been particularly profitable to follow in Listed races at the royal meeting, with seven of 25 runners at that level winning for a £38.61 profit to a £1 level stake.

Nine of O'Brien's 45 two-year-old runners in the last five years have won.

John Gosden

John Gosden, who saddles the likes of Terebellum and Frankly Darling on the opening day of Royal Ascot, has won 12 races at the meeting in the last five years.

He does not have as many two-year-old runners as O'Brien (two from ten), with the bulk of his winners aged three or four.

Like O'Brien, it has been profitable at recent Royal Ascots to back Gosden's runners in Listed company (four winners from 17 runners, +£19.50).

Seven of Gosden's 12 winners in the last five years have been ridden by Frankie Dettori.

Sir Michael Stoute

Sir Michael Stoute is the most successful trainer in Royal Ascot history and has had nine winners in the last five years, seven of which have come over ten or 12 furlongs.

His winners have been spread about seven jockeys during the last five years, although it is again worth noting if Dettori is booked on any of Stoute's runners. The pair have had three winners from just nine runners in the last five Royal Ascots, including Crystal Ocean in last year's Prince of Wales's Stakes.

Jockeys

Ryan Moore

Ryan Moore has operated at a tremendous 21 per cent strike-rate over the last five Royal Ascots, winning 31 races and at least hitting the places with almost half of his 147 rides.

That is quite the statistic, although his position at the top of the recent Royal Ascot standings tallies up with O'Brien being top trainer. The pair have combined for 23 of Moore's wins (from 101 rides).

Moore has a full book of rides on day one, including Queen Anne favourite Circus Maximus and King Edward VII market leader Mogul.

Frankie Dettori

Dettori is synonymous with Ascot, as emphasised by his frenzied four-timer on the Thursday of last year's royal meeting.

It is little surprise the 49-year-old proves so popular with punters, as backing every Dettori mount at the last five royal meetings with a £1 would have yielded a profit of £24.63, including 18 winners.

Dettori starts this year's Royal Ascot with six rides, including Ribblesdale Stakes favourite Frankly Darling.

Danny Tudhope

While William Buick and James Doyle have ridden more winners than Danny Tudhope across the last five Royal Ascots, they have also had plenty more rides.

Tudhope's six winners have come from just 33 rides at a strike-rate of 18 per cent.
