Royal Ascot Day 4 Races
The penultimate day of Royal Ascot is arguably the best yet, with seven races including five Group races including the feature race, the Commonwealth Cup. The race to open proceedings is the inaugural running of the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap, added to facilitate the increase in Royal Ascot entries this year. However, possibly the most anticipated race of the day is the Hardwicke Stakes, a fiercely competitive Group 2 with Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck taking on last year’s winner Defoe and the well-bred Elarqam.

Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap –
- 7f on soft ground proved just too far for her on debut (November) but she made no mistake with front-running win over 6f at Lingfield (AW) three weeks later; a bit disappointing behind Maystar at Wolverhampton in December but her recent return to action at Haydock, where she suffered a torrid passage when making her move, strongly suggested she was ahead of her mark; she'll need to be from out of the handicap but this should be run to suit and she's one to take very seriously.
- Soon led and strode clear in the closing stages to beat a shorter-priced stablemate in maiden at Gulfstream Park (5f, dirt) last month; a typically interesting 2yo challenger for US trainer Wesley Ward.
- Powerful win from the front at Yarmouth (5f, good to firm), running on strongly in the final 1f; changed ownership since; sire Prince Of Lir won this race in 2016; has strong credentials and may be the answer.
- Won the Derby last June, albeit a far from vintage renewal of the premier Classic, but hit and miss afterwards, running very well on a couple of occasions but well held two other times too; back on track with very good second in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket 14 days ago and big chance on that form on this relatively quick return.
- A half-brother to the brilliant sprinter Harry Angel, the twice-raced colt marked himself out as a useful prospect when landing a fair novice race at Haydock last May. Held up that day he travelled powerfully into the contest before pulling nicely clear inside the final furlong. Varian can ready one after a break and has his string in superb form.
- Sharp enough to win over 7f around Chester but hinted that stamina would be his forte when third in a 1m2f Group 3 at Newmarket on his final run as a 2yo; brushed aside by English King in the Lingfield Derby Trial (11.6f) on reappearance but in a fast time and the winner could be top class; that race has produced five winners of this since 2002; solid prospects over a trip he should stay.
- Steadily progressive 4yo who wasn't beaten far in muddling race at Meydan (in a hood, left off now) last time in January; finished strongly when winning useful race at same track the time before and this 5lb higher mark far from unreasonable, so of strong interest with the possibility of more still to come.

Royal Ascot Day 3 Results
Day three at Royal Ascot was run on soft ground after overnight rain and caused a few market moves ahead of the afternoon action. The winning margins were larger than normal but there looked to be plenty of stars on show, in particular Battleground and Khaloosy who bossed some competitive fields. However, Wednesday was all about Stradivarius. The John Gosden-trained superstar was bidding to join a short list of legends to win a third Ascot Gold Cup and he duly obliged in emphatic fashion. See the full results below:
1:15: Highland Chief 20/1 (Paul & Oliver Cole/Rossa Ryan)
1:50: Mountain Angel 4/1F (Roger Varian/James Doyle)
2:25: Molatham 11/2 (Roger Varian/Jim Crowley)
3:00: Battleground 11/4F 18/1 (Aidan O’Brien.Ryan Moore)
3:35: Stradivarius 4/5F (John Gosden/Frankie Dettori)
4:10: Khaloosy 9/2 (Roger Varian/Jim Crowley)
4:40: Onassis (Charlie Fellowes/Hayley Turner)
