Red-hot John Quinn bids for third Royal Ascot juvenile win in five years
John Quinn hopes Liberty Beach could emulate last year's Royal Ascot winner Signora Cabello after kick-starting the trainer's stunning big-race treble on Saturday.
He likens her to the filly who landed the Queen Mary Stakes last year, as an unassuming two-year-old who steps up on her home work when she gets to the course.
Quinn is eyeing the Queen Mary or Windsor Castle Stakes for Liberty Beach, whose victory in the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley was followed by those of stablemates Safe Voyage in Group 3 company at Haydock and Lord Riddiford in a £40,000 handicap at Chelmsford.
"She's been an unassuming filly but we thought the same with Signora Cabello last year," Quinn said on Sunday. "She just worked okay at home and we felt she'd win races but she woke up on the racetrack.
"We always liked her and I thought she'd run nicely at Redcar on her debut and she did well to win. I thought she warranted her place in the Hilary Needler and she did very well to win. She's a real two-year-old with a very good mind."
Malton-based Quinn will be bidding for his third Royal Ascot juvenile victory in five years, having also landed the Coventry Stakes with The Wow Signal in 2014.
"You can only beat what's put in front of you and Liberty Beach didn't get a great run through early on but she won nicely in the end," he reflected.
"She's a fair filly and I said to the owner there's only one Royal Ascot. As long as we're happy with her I'll put her in the Queen Mary and the Windsor Castle. It's very tough down there but this filly warrants her place."
Signora Cabello is set to return to Royal Ascot in headgear for the King's Stand Stakes as she seeks a first win of 2019.
"If I'm pleased with her later in the week she'll go there," Quinn said. "I'm dropping her back to five furlongs and I think that's her trip, although she didn't run too badly over six at Haydock, and we're going to put blinkers on her so fingers crossed."
The trainer is considering Glorious Goodwood for John Of Gaunt hero Safe Voyage and said: "I'd love to take him to the Lennox Stakes, providing there's no 'firm' in the ground description.
"He's an amazing horse, we thought he did really well for the team last year but he's upped the ante again."
Newcastle's Gosforth Park Cup is the likely target for Lord Riddiford and Quinn has another big five-furlong prize in his sights next weekend.
"Ascot is not El Astronaute's gig and he goes to Cork next Saturday for a Listed race," he said. "I had him in the Achilles at Haydock but I'm glad I didn't run him as the ground was too soft."
