Snowden backs review of handicapping system after Irish statistical domination

Horses trained in Ireland outperformed their British counterparts by three to one during the Aintree festival less than a month after their unprecedented domination at the Cheltenham Festival.

Despite only supplying 14.6 per cent of the runners during the three-day fixture in Liverpool, Irish horses had a winners-to-runners ratio of 15.2 per cent topped by Minella Times leading home an Irish 1-2-3-4-5 in the Randox Grand National, where 11 of the first 13 home were trained in Ireland as well as 12 of the 15 finishers.

By contrast, horses trained in Britain operated at a winners-to-runners ratio of just 5.2 per cent, an increase from the 2019 ratio of 4.5 per cent but the third-lowest in the last decade.
