Ladbrokes Coral betting shop turnover on National shows 'trend-bucking growth'
Ladbrokes Coral have hailed record turnover on the Grand National and a surprising growth in betting shop stakes for the first time in many years.
Like Paddy Power, the bookmaker also claimed to have made a profit on the race despite the victory of 4-1 favourite Tiger Roll and several other layers reporting they had taken a hit.
Simon Clare, PR director for Ladbrokes Coral, said: "It was an amazing Grand National in terms of mass market betting appeal. Both the Ladbrokes and Coral digital channels saw really healthy growth in stakes, active customers and new customers compared to last year.
"However, even more amazing was a trend-bucking growth in betting shop turnover across the Ladbrokes and Coral estate of 3,400 shops, which is the first time that's happened for many years.
"Betting shop staff everywhere deserve great praise and recognition for the amazing service they provided customers, and racing, on this showcase day for the sport."
He added: "Whilst a winning favourite in the Grand National is never what the bookies hope for, Tiger Roll’s victory was nowhere near as bad as might have been expected.
"He was the best backed horse in the race but that was mitigated in part by his short price, and we also laid a fantastic spread of money across all 40 runners. The likes of Outlander, Blow By Blow, Rock The Kasbah, Tea For Two and Magic Of Light would have been much worse results than the favourite in our book at the off."
