'He looks a massive price' - where does the Arc value lie now with Baaeed out?

Adayar and Alpinista: could benefit from Shadwell's decision to skip the Arc with Baaeed
Adayar and Alpinista: could benefit from Shadwell's decision to skip the Arc with Baaeed

After a month-long will-he-won't-he following his spectacular performance in the Juddmonte International, William Haggas confirmed on Wednesday that Baaeed would not end his career in the Arc and will instead be aimed at the Champion Stakes. The unbeaten four-year-old had topped the market for the Longchamp spectacular but where does the value lie after his defection?

'Adayar looks a massive price'

Odds: 16-1 (generally)

By David Jennings, deputy Ireland editor

Surely Charlie Appleby will rejig his plans now that the Arc has become an easier race to win than the Champion Stakes.

Last year's Derby winner Adayar looks a massive price at 16-1 in the wake of the Baaeed news. Don't forget he traded at a low of 1.55 in-running on Betfair before fading into fourth 12 months ago, but that was after running in the Classic Trials at Sandown and Lingfield and winning the Derby and the King George. It was a rigorous campaign and he might not have been at his peak.

His comeback success at Doncaster was a lovely prep for a big autumn target and I don't subscribe to the theory he is better over 1m2f than 1m4f. His two best displays arrived over the Arc trip where he recorded RPRs of 124 and 128 in the Derby and King George. He handles any ground and he will be going to France as fresh as anything else in the race.

'Charlie Appleby must seriously consider it'

Odds: 16-1 (generally)

By James Hill, tipster

I've just not been that impressed by the three-year-olds this season so I'm happy to take on the new favourite Luxembourg, and surely Charlie Appleby has to now seriously consider the Arc for Adayar.

It's a big ask after just the one start this season, but Enable managed it as a four-year-old, while former Godolphin winner Sakhee was also lightly campaigned before scoring at Longchamp, and I don't think things really went right for Adayar when he ran so well in last year's race. Both he and the winner from 12 months ago, Torquator Tasso, are where the current value lies in my opinion.

'Alpinista gets my vote'

Odds: 6-1 (generally)

By Liam Headd, reporter

It's a real shame we won't see the brilliant Baaeed take his chance, but the announcement doesn't really come as a shock and without him Alpinista gets my vote after she delivered a gutsy performance in the Yorkshire Oaks.

The top-class mare is on a seven-race winning run – all over the Arc distance – and has the credentials to make it eight on her return to France, having landed the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in July. She has been targeted at this all year and will have no issues if the ground turns soft, either.
