'We're all very excited about getting Checkandchallenge out again'
John O'Hara talks to Newmarket trainer William Knight
The decision to return to Newmarket in 2020 has proved to be a shrewd decision for William Knight as last year he enjoyed his joint-best season numerically (34 wins) and the most lucrative, with his team earning more than £360,000 in prize-money.
“It was a gamble having spent many years at Angmering Park, but I felt it was one I had to take,” he says. “I was quite familiar with Newmarket anyway and coming here we’re now getting a better type of horse to train. The move gave my career a nice kickstart and it’s going very well.”
Checkandchallenge, his exciting son of Fast Company, is on the way back and due to reappear at Newmarket’s July meeting. “He’s a promising colt and after his impressive Listed success we felt we had to go to the 2,000 Guineas, but a series of events meant it was a negative experience for him. It has been hard work getting him back, but I’m pleased with where he is now and the plan is to go to the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes with a penalty. He’s a talented colt and hopefully he can put his best foot forward.”
