Bella Crowley isn't that happy that August has given way to September, because it means a return to school in a uniform she isn't too keen on. Her father Jim has his own reasons for wishing August could last forever; he's never had a month like it.

It started very well with victory on Here Comes When in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, held up admirably in the middle thanks to Massaat in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, and ended with a mighty flourish as Crowley won both the Juddmonte International on Ulysses and the laurels of top jockey at York's Ebor meeting.

Crowley has done his share of record-breaking in recent times, but his haul in August got the statisticians excited because he won more prize-money in that single month than he'd earned during his entire eight-season spell as a jump jockey. Money comes and goes, of course, but Crowley will bask in the warmth of that hot streak for a long time.
