Trade body hails milestone in standardising markers of harm for online gambling
Even as UK betting operators await publication of the government's gambling review white paper, which will include measures aimed at addressing problem gambling, one of their trade bodies, the European Gaming and Betting Association, has made a breakthrough on the topic at European level.
The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), whose 34 national members, including the UK, work to develop standards and specifications in various sectors, has approved the creation of a common standard on markers of harm for online gambling, based on a proposal submitted last month by the EGBA.
Maarten Haijer, secretary-general of the Brussels-based EGBA, which represents leading online gambling operators established, licensed and regulated in the EU and UK, described the move as "a milestone and a significant step forward for safer gambling in Europe".
