David Brown bounces back to form as he teams up with Ray Dawson for a double

David Brown: 'We only take them out with very good reason'
David Brown: first winners since May

Local trainer David Brown made the short trip to Dunstall Park worthwhile as he bounced back to form with a double from his only two runners on the card.

The Nottinghamshire handler had been without a winner for 36 days and 17 runners before Ray Dawson steered True Hero to success in the 5f handicap.

Brown was quick to praise Dawson, who stepped in for injured regular rider Kevin Stott, saying: "It was a fabulous ride. I told him what we found with Kevin was that he likes to be up there near the front so he has something to take him along.

"He stayed outside for as long as could. He did it really well today and quickened up nicely."

Brown and Dawson's day got even better as the pair combined to take the 7f handicap with 9-4 favourite Frow.

That took Brown to nine wins for the season with work to be done to match his 2020 tally of 21.

He said: "We've been doing alright. Our record last year was as good as anybodys so hopefully we can keep getting a winner or two to match that."

Veteran strikes for Makin

One of David Brown's former horses rolled back the years as ten-year-old Exchequer landed the second division of the 6f handicap on his third start for Phillip Makin.

Makin is the sixth different trainer to handle Exchequer, who ran off a mark as high as 95 when with Brown, but he was winning off a more modest rating of 58 here for apprentice Rhys Clutterbuck.

Makin said: "He's a grand old horse. We were disappointed with him when we ran him on turf so that was a bit more like it today."

Clutterbuck went on to complete a double on the card as he steered Katelli to victory in division two of the 5f handicap for trainer Brian Barr.
