UFC 265 preview

The interim heavyweight belt is up for grabs at UFC 265 as Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane go toe-to-toe in Texas for the right to take on champion Francis Ngannou.

Gane is 9-0 since transitioning into MMA, following a 13-0 run as a Muay Thai fighter, and he has emerged as a serious contender in the heavyweight division.

The Frenchman has already risen to number three in the division, despite stepping into the UFC octagon on only six occasions. Lewis, meanwhile, is a UFC veteran having been part of the company since 2014.

At the age of 36, this is likely Lewis’s last shot at the title, having lost to former champion Daniel Cormier in his only previous title bout in 2018.

Lewis boasts the most knockouts in UFC heavyweight history (12) and is one of the most dangerous strikers in the game. But unfortunately for the American, Gane is a well-rounded competitor and isn’t likely to be drawn into a slugfest.

Gane is far more athletic and he holds the edge when it comes to technical ability.

Expect Bon Gamin to keep his distance and ease into proceedings, picking his shots carefully before exerting his dominance in the later rounds or earning a win by decision.

Gane’s last two fights have gone the distance and, with a unification bout up for grabs, he won’t be taking any unnecessary risks against his wily opponent.
