Preview

Conor McGregor can book a shot at the lightweight title by winning his second fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on Fight Island.

The pair first clashed in 2014 when they were looking to send out a statement in the featherweight division, something McGregor achieved with a victory that set him on the path to stardom.

The controversial Irishman came out with intent, swinging a hook kick, before setting up several attacking sequences with a variety of head and body kicks.

Backed up against the cage and without an obvious exit route, Poirier was dropped by McGregor's notorious left hook and finished on the canvas with just one minute 46 seconds on the clock.

McGregor, a former two-weight champion, is known for making bold predictions and has set himself the target of ending the rematch within 60 seconds.

History suggests he is more than capable of delivering on that promise after dispatching Donald Cerrone just 40 seconds into his last fight, while he needed just 13 seconds to stop Jose Aldo when claiming the featherweight strap at UFC 194.

However, inactivity could be an issue for Mystic Mac, who made just one appearance in 2020, and his forecast might be slightly ambitious.

The Diamond was rough around the edges when the pair first met but he heads into this bout with a much more accomplished record, winning on five of his last six trips to the octagon.

Poirier and McGregor love to throw down and this should be an all-out brawl between two of the top contenders in the division.

McGregor still looks to have the edge when it comes to technical ability and he should have the tools to wrap up a win in round two.

Just two of McGregor's previous appearances in the UFC have gone the distance with 19 of his 26 career fights ending via KO or TKO.
