Night Eight preview
Belgium's Dimitri van den Bergh is sitting one point clear of Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen at the top of the Premier League table after Night Seven and is fancied to cement his place in pole position with a win over Gary Anderson tonight.
Van den Bergh has looked comfortable and confident at the oche and is clearly in a good place mentally. He spoke of his enjoyment on the stage last night in an interview after his 7-4 defeat of former world champion Rob Cross.
The Belgian ace came from 2-1 behind to reel off five consecutive legs in a sensational display of scoring and finishing. Checkouts of 96 and 124 featured, along with 11 and 12-dart legs, and the 26-year-old was quickly in control as he bagged another victory.
Two-time Premier League winner and former world champion Anderson will no doubt provide a sterner test tonight at the Marshall Arena, but van den Bergh is flying and can justify favouritism.
Cross takes on Aspinall in the opener tonight in another match where the favourite is hard to oppose. Voltage has lost four of his last six and currently sits in the last open elimination spot.
The pressure is on Cross in a big way - his overall form has seen him slide down the rankings and this could be the last we see of him in this event for some time unless he improves.
The Asp has been playing well and, despite missing two match darts in the final leg of his draw with Jonny Clayton last night, can continue the form that has helped him take a lofty position in the table.
Michael van Gerwen tackles in-form Grand Slam of Darts winner Jose de Sousa in a match that could go the distance and the draw is a tempting price for this one.
MVG has won both of his previous meetings on the stage against de Sousa, but has been far from his best and the popular Portuguese can compete.
James 'The Machine' Wade and Jonny Clayton clash in the other match tonight and a close contest is expected.
