History will be made on Saturday when the first MLB game to be played in Europe takes place, as the New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox at the London Stadium.

It is a major coup to have arguably the two biggest clubs in baseball playing a pair of regular season games in England - they play the second game on Sunday afternoon - and it was no surprise to see tickets sell fast for both matches.

The Yankees go into the game in better form, having had a great first half to the season in which they have opened up a 6.5-game lead in the AL East.

Both teams score a lot of runs, averaging around 5.5 runs a game this season, and both bullpens have Earned Run Averages close to four, so there is not too much between the teams on that front.

There is a load of power in both line-ups, and the players will surely be tempted to swing for the fences in a game that is set to have an extraordinary atmosphere compared to a run-of-the-mill regular- season game.

The ballpark dimensions look like they could favour the hitter, but those big swings could play into the hands of Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka, who is taken to register more strikeouts than his opposite number for the Red Sox, Rick Porcello.

Tanaka is definitely having a better year, with a 3.21 Earned Run Average compared to Porcello’s fairly ugly 4.52, and crucially he has a clear edge on strikeouts, with 85 K’s in his 16 starts, compared to the Boston starter's 76 in the same number of games.

Recommendation
M Tanaka to have more strikeouts
