Day seven preview

Barbora Krejcikova v Victoria Azarenka

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka has breezed through the first few rounds at Melbourne Park this year but should underestimate fourth-round opponent Barbora Krejcikova at her peril.

This is the deepest Krejcikova has ever gone in the season's first Grand Slam tournament but she won her first major title only last year and the fourth seed has again been playing well in 2022.

As part of her preparations for the Australian Open, Krejcikova progressed to the final of the Sydney International, losing to in-form Paula Badosa but having accounted for talented Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the semi-finals.

Jelena Ostapenko was a challenging third-round opponent but Krejcikova fought back against the Latvian to get the job done and has dropped only one set in the tournament.

Azarenka, meanwhile, is yet to face much resistance and was knocked out of the Adelaide International at the quarter-final stage earlier this month. Bookies favour her but, at odds-against, Krejcikova looks the bet.

Miomir Kecmanovic v Gael Monfils

Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic has spoken of dedicating his Australian Open run to deported compatriot Novak Djokovic and the unseeded 22-year-old has been doing his country proud.

A victory over useful Italian Lorenzo Sonego saw Kecmanovic through to the fourth round and although he will have his work cut out against Monfils, the outsider could make it a competitive encounter.

Veteran Monfils has recorded three consecutive straight-set wins in Melbourne and did not drop a single set on his way to a title triumph in one of the Adelaide International tournaments earlier this month.

Winning matches so comprehensively certainly helps the cause of the Frenchman who, at 35, will want to preserve energy for the later rounds.

But Monfils may not have things all his own way against Kecmanovic, who looks a decent bet to win at least a set.

Madison Keys v Paula Badosa

Two of the most impressive players on the WTA circuit in the first month of the new season have been Madison Keys and Paula Badosa and tennis fans and punters could be in for a pulsating affair when they clash in the fourth round in Melbourne.

Keys flopped in one of the Melbourne Summer Set tournaments in the opening week of the campaign. But the American responded by winning the second Adelaide International event, beating Coco Gauff in the semi-finals, before defeating 11th seed Sofia Kenin in her Australian Open curtain-raiser.

Badosa has been on a decent run for several months. Since October she has been victorious at Indian Wells, reached the WTA Finals semi-finals and secured the Sydney International title.

The Spanish eighth seed is the oddsmakers' favourite but this is unlikely to be an easy contest with Keys back to somewhere near her best, so punting on the match to go the distance could be wise.
