Headway to lead over 7f out, headed over 2f out, weakened over 1f out (trainer's rep said that the gelding lost interest when headed entering the home straight and e indicated that the trainer may experiment with a different form of headgear in future) (tchd 7/2)
Slowly into stride and awkward start, always behind (vet said gelding was slightly lame on its right-fore; jockey said regarding running and riding that his instructions were to jump out and sit where he found himself and not to fire the gelding up, as he has a history of being keen at home. Adding that after jumping very awkwardly and losing some ground, he considered the early pace to be quick and therefore wanted to keep the gelding travelling and where he was comfortable, before placing the gelding under pressure inside the final 3 furlongs. The trainer's rep confirmed the instructions and stated that he was dissatisfied with the ride given as he considered that Searle had surrendered too much ground in the first half of the race) (op 28/1 tchd 25/1)
