Top points scorer Honeysuckle has major effect on pursuit of Ten To Follow prize
Outside the Cheltenham Festival it is unlikely any meeting will have as big an impact on the outcome of the Tote Ten To Follow competition as the Dublin Racing Festival. Packed full of quality, including two bonus races, and supported over the weekend with top action at Sandown and Musselburgh, it has brought a marked shift in leaderboard standings.
Honeysuckle now heads the table of top performers with 80.04 points after her second success in the Irish Champion Hurdle and she is followed by Dublin Chase victor Chacun Pour Soi on 75.64 points.
It is no surprise those two have had such a powerful effect on the competition as Honeysuckle was selected as a member of 18,869 squads and Chacun Pour Soi by 10,103.
Among the stables to include both is TimmyV10 who, having also selected Irish Gold Cup scorer Kemboy and Champion Hurdle runner-up Abacadabras, sweeps 57 places up the charts to the number one spot.
Just 1,634 Ten To Follow stables stuck with Kemboy for this season's competition, compared to the 6,231 who identified the chasing promise of Monkfish and landed 27.42 points from his success in the Flogas Novice Chase, or the 2,460 stables who saw the potential in Appreciate It and were rewarded with 27.22 points for his win in the Chanelle Pharma Novice Hurdle.
A few shrewd observers – 44 to be exact – selected Energumene at the start of the season. His win in the Irish Arkle delivered 27.72 points and the prospect of plenty more in the Cheltenham equivalent.
At Sandown, four-time champion jockey Richard Johnson landed a treble, giving Sporting John a peach of a ride in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices' Chase that yielded 45.40 points for 243 players before Native River rolled back the years in the Cotswold Chase to land 29.70 points for 519 loyal followers. The treble was completed by Deise Aba in the Masters Handicap Chase to give 166 stables 20.5 points.
