Our top tipster believes finding both Guineas winners could prove key

If you can get off to a flyer by landing both Guineas that will set you up well for the rest of the season because it’s likely those winners will go on to land even more bonus race points.

The 2,000 Guineas, in particular, is often one of the strongest races run all season and even the beaten horses are usually worth following. For that reason I’ll put two in for that contest.

Thunder Moon and Wembley finished second and third behind St Mark’s Basilica in the Dewhurst last season but I suspect both might be better than they showed that day. Wembley looks likely to improve as the season goes on, but Thunder Moon might be an earlier type.

Santa Barbara has been a huge gamble for the 1,000 Guineas and that’s good enough for me. She represents the Ballydoyle team and they appear to hold her in the highest regard. She also heads the market for the Oaks and, if she wins at Newmarket, she will go there as favourite.

There are plenty of staying races in the calendar and I quite like Sir Ron Priestley, who won well on his return from a long absence in the Further Flight at Nottingham and can improve.

Oxted shows plenty of speed and might have more options this season, with trainer Roger Teal suggesting he could drop to the minimum trip. Oxted looks the most solid sprinter.

High Definition is already a short-priced favourite for the Derby and must be included.

Mishriff has proved himself a serious contender for all the top 1m2f-1m4f Group 1s this season with wins in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. He should add a dash of class to my list.

There are two spaces remaining, so let’s go for a couple of wildcards. Alkumait looked good when winning the Mill Reef at Newbury last year and could develop into a smart sprinter, while I also liked the way Al Aasy won the John Porter at Newbury. He takes the final spot.
