David Probert aiming for breakthrough Group 1 success on Tip Two Win

The colt he had behind him in the 2,000 Guineas has since won the Derby and now opportunity knocks for Tip Two Win, the Newmarket runner-up who bids to land a David v Goliath-style knockout blow in the St James's Palace Stakes.

Jockey David Probert has never won a Group 1, but in the shape of Tip Two Win he has a live prospect to right that wrong at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, when the Roger Teal-trained stable star takes on rivals from the yards of Aidan O'Brien and John Gosden, among others.

He did likewise at Newmarket, where as a 50-1 shot he ran a blinder to finish second to Saxon Warrior and come home in front of Masar, who has since gone on to Classic glory at Epsom.

Tip Two Win, the star of Teal's 25-horse string, is second favourite at around 9-2 for Tuesday's race, and Probert is determined to grasp the opportunity.

"It's so difficult to get these rides," said Probert on Sunday. "It's very important for me and Roger as horses like this to put us both on the map and give us the boost in our careers we probably need.

"It's nice to have so many trainers that have a bit of a faith in you. There are probably 20 jockeys in the weighing room that could get on a horse and win on it and they don't get the opportunities they deserve.

"I'm kind of one of them that needs the opportunity to go forward, and to get a chance like this in the St James's Palace, it's exciting."

Circumstances and being in the right place at the right time have played a part in how Probert has found himself back on Tip Two Win, having ridden the colt for his first two starts before Tom Marquand and Adam Kirby came aboard.

"I had other commitments throughout last year so had to switch, and Adam rode Tip Two Win's dam [Freddie's Girl] so knows the breeding quite well, and that's why he took the ride at Doncaster," explained Probert.

"It came to the winter and Adam wasn't available and Roger rang and asked if I'd like to ride him and I said, 'Of course'."

Probert was back aboard for a brace of wins in Qatar in the winter, before the son of Dark Angel belied his odds to go down by just a length and a half to Saxon Warrior at Newmarket.

The 2,000 Guineas form was franked in the Derby, when not only did Newmarket third Masar emerge triumphant, but 2,000 Guineas fifth Roaring Lion ran well to be third with Saxon Warrior fourth.

Ten horses were declared for the St James's Palace on Sunday. The market is headed by the Gosden-trained Without Parole at 11-4, with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Romanised and last year's champion juvenile US Navy Flag – trained by O'Brien – around the 6-1 mark.

Probert, who in 2008 was joint-champion apprentice with William Buick, continued: "Tip Two Win is in good order, Roger has done a great job with him and freshened him up well. I sat on him last week and he seems as good as Newmarket, probably better.

"We're drawn in eight and have every chance. It looks like there will be a bit of pace in the race, hopefully we'll have a strong pace to aim at and he's got a very good turn of foot."

Born In Bombay's Britannia victory in 2014 is Probert's sole Royal Ascot winner to date, but he comes into the meeting in good form, and has another decent chance in that race this year with Crack On Crack On.

The Clive Cox-trained horse heads the market for Thursday's handicap with most firms at 8-1, and is unbeaten in two starts this year, most recently winning the valuable Silver Bowl at Haydock.

Probert said: "He goes there in good order off a very good mark.

"It's a very competitive handicap but he looks to be weighted well and he'll get a strong gallop, which means he can settle early on."
