'We all underestimated her' - Bella's Pearl springs 80-1 shock for Stuart Kittow
Bella's Pearl produced the upset of the day to win the 5f novice stakes at 80-1, turning over 1-4 favourite Peggoty despite Callum Shepherd riding with a slipped saddle.
The two-year-old finished six lengths behind Peggoty at Bath two weeks ago, but showed a dramatic improvement to win by a nose under Shepherd.
"I think we all underestimated her," said trainer Stuart Kittow. "I didn't think she'd like the ground because she seemed to dislike it at Bath, and we haven't really done much with her at home as it's only been 13 days since her last run. She's obviously improving, and she's not slow either.
"I think her owner had a little bit of money on. They bred her and so they're absolutely thrilled, which is the main thing."
Kittow, who also trained Bella's Pearl's dam Plauseabella, added: "Her dam wasn't very big but she's even smaller. She may be little but she has got such a big heart, and that's what's important."
Murphy makes amends
Peggoty's rider Oisin Murphy had better luck on the James Fanshawe-trained Handsome, winner of the second 1m3½f handicap on the card, and he landed a double on Moosmee – who was following up a win at the track 12 days ago – in the 7f handicap.
