Volatile Analyst strengthened the partnership between trainer Keith Dalgleish and jockey Callum Rodriguez by winning the Coral Sprint Trophy.

Rodriguez committed to Dalgleish at the start of the year and the pair capped a productive campaign with a valuable victory after the winner survived a stewards' inquiry into the finish of the £100,000 contest.

Volatile Analyst, backed into 11-1 (from 33) after being tipped by Pricewise, was in front of unlucky runner-up Laugh A Minute when he drifted left, but the stewards deemed the interference had not improved his placing.

"I wasn't too worried as he was clear when he drifted on to the rail," said Rodriguez, who received a caution. "He was getting a bit lonely in the final stages, but when he felt the other horse coming he was going again. He's very talented and the first-time hood has worked."

Dual-purpose trainer Dalgleish, who also owns Volatile Analyst, and 2017 Ebor winner Rodriguez, who served his apprenticeship with Michael Dods, are closing in on their best yearly totals on the Flat.

"We committed 100 per cent to each other at the start of the year and we've had a great time," said the jockey. "Keith's horses have been in really good form and it's nice this horse has picked up a big prize."

Canonized toughs it out

It takes a tough juvenile to run well on consecutive days and Canonized showed again that she is exactly that.

The Cheveley Park-owned filly went down by a short head in a Group 3 at Ayr last month, 24 hours after finishing fifth, not beaten far, in a Listed race at the Scottish track.

That experience was clearly not lost on Canonized as she knuckled down gamely to win the Listed Rockingham Stakes under Tom Marquand.

"She's been an ultra-consistent filly and deserved a good win," said the jockey. "She had to be pretty tough there. She's been busy for a two-year-old of William's [Haggas] and is thriving off her racing."

Bay Bridge defies layoff

Bay Bridge had been off since winning the London Gold Cup at Newbury in May and returned with a smooth success in the 1m2½f handicap.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, who went up 15lb for that Newbury success, showed he retains lots of potential with a cosy half-length victory.

"He's been progressing very well," said winning jockey Richard Kingscote. "He had a nice smooth run round there and it was good. He'd had a bit of a break and has done everything right."

Gumball posts another Flat win

Gumball served notice of his wellbeing for the jumps season when winning the 2m½f handicap on his first start for Fergal O'Brien.

The Terry Warner-owned grey is better known for running over hurdles and fences, but has now won four of his seven Flat starts.

Top award for Easterby

Tim Easterby capped his best season by claiming York's Charles Clinkard top trainer title for the second time.

Easterby could not add to his tally at the track's final fixture of the year, but was the clear winner of an award he last gained back in 1999, racking up 12 victories including Winter Power in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.
