Mark Johnston filly shows what buyers missed out on with impressive debut win
Nobody seemed to want Out In Yorkshire at the sales, nor her dam back in the day, but the two-year-old looks a bargain after making an impressive winning debut.
Retained by Mark Johnston for just £2,500 when she went through the ring last October, Out In Yorkshire earned more than that in the 64 seconds it took her to take division two of the two-year-old fillies' race.
"We bred her and took her to the sales and we bought her in, I wasn't going to sell her for £2,500," said the trainer, who also raced her dam Yorkindred Spirit.
"When the owner took the dam to the sales I bought her for £10,000. Why nobody likes the pedigree I don't know.
"Out In Yorkshire is clearly neither on pedigree nor looks a five-furlong horse but she'd been showing enough and a combination of the hill and the opposition meant she was sharp enough for today. She'll be a lot better over further."
Those who missed the winner last year could get another chance on the eve of Royal Ascot as Johnston said: "We'll try and win again and if the Ascot sale is still on this year, since we own this horse and we couldn't sell her, it wouldn't be impossible she would go there."
Boy oh boy
Blu Boy hinted that his £62,000 purchase price may be money well spent after all by following up last week's Newcastle win under a penalty in the three-year-old 7f handicap.
"This horse looked as though he was going to be very disappointing as we paid quite a lot for him at the breeze-up this time last year," said trainer Ed Bethell's father James.
"But we cut him and it's made a hell of a lot of difference. He had to run here as he was put up 12lb and he did it well."
Another good result
Wednesday night success at Rotherham was swiftly followed by Thursday afternoon success at Beverley for a syndicate of Middlesbrough FC fans.
Less than a day after their team enjoyed a 2-1 victory in the Championship at the New York Stadium, Lady Ayresome – the filly named after their club's former ground – came good at the second attempt in division two of the novice event under Kevin Stott.
"Lady Ayresome ran really well at Redcar on her first start and Kevin said she's probably going to get six furlongs so the idea was to find a similar race with a stiff finish and this was ideal," said trainer Kevin Ryan's son and assistant Adam.
"She got a little bit unbalanced coming down the hill but then she hit the rising ground and the further she was going the further was going away. That was a nice progression."
