Mullins joy as Recall rallies to put record straight 15 years on
Redolent of history and always red in tooth and claw the Ladbrokes Trophy is the very essence of a great staying chase and served up an epic on Saturday with favourite Total Recall rallying from seeming defeat to haul in the unflinching Whisper by a hard-earned neck.
This was Willie Mullins' second win in this great race but the first he will get to keep. And enjoy forever.
Back in 2002 his Be My Royal was triumphant but disqualified the following year over a technicality involving contaminated feed. So Newbury's greatest day owed Mullins some recompense. They say revenge is a dish best served cold and this winning recipe has spent 15 years in Willie's deep freeze.
