Jarvis yard in top form as stable star Lady Bowthorpe's Ascot date nears
William Jarvis's stable received the perfect confidence-boost heading into Royal Ascot by saddling a double which included One Night Stand's four-and-a-half-length victory under Silvestre de Sousa in the 6f handicap.
Jarvis is set to saddle hot favourite Lady Bowthorpe in Wednesday's Duke of Cambridge Stakes at the royal meeting and he could have another horse to represent him at the bigger meetings in future with this four-year-old.
"We've always liked the horse," he said. "He's improved from three to four and it was visually impressive. I was delighted with him.
"He's a very sound horse and he's been a lovely horse to train. Let's see what the handicapper does, he'll go up between five and eight, I would think. He could get into the consolation Stewards' Cup, he could be a fun horse. He's very quick, but six is his trip."
The trainer and jockey also combined with Sendacard in the following race over the same trip, despite the filly coming under pressure from a long way out.
The trainer said of De Sousa: "He wasn't champion jockey for nothing, was he? She obviously lost her way as a three-year-old, we'd got a little bit lucky because of the four non-runners, but she did it well."
Jarvis trained Grand Lodge to win the St James's Palace Stakes in 1994 and will be back for more at Royal Ascot next week with Lockinge runner-up Lady Bowthorpe, whose remarkable progress has been one of the stories of the season.
"She was tired after the Lockinge," he said. "She gave her all and she's a filly who absolutely gave 100 per cent. We've minded her and she seems in very good form at the moment.
"We're not going to get any rain, but if we were lucky enough to get a shower in the next six days that would help. As long as it's good, safe ground she'll take her chance."
Smart stayers
Other winners on the card included Didtheyleaveuoutto in the 1m6f handicap and the progressive Jewel In My Crown, who made a successful handicap debut over 1m2f.
Century up
Love De Vega gave Mark Johnston his 100th winner of the season in the opening 6f novice stakes and was given a quote of 25-1 for next week's Chesham Stakes.
