'He put it to bed very easily' - Mark McNiff newcomer impresses with 33-1 strike
Mark McNiff has been enjoying a fine time of things with his jumps squad but the Sligo trainer unleashed a promising Flat newcomer on Monday when Secret Vision bolted up by seven and a half lengths in the mile maiden.
The testing conditions clearly didn't inconvenience the 33-1 winner, who struck under last season's champion apprentice Gavin Ryan in emphatic fashion.
"Mark said he was a nice horse without doubt," Ryan told Racing TV. "He felt he might need the run because first time out you never know how they're going to handle it and Gowran is a stiff enough test – especially on this testing ground."
He added of the three-year-old, who was picked up for just €8,000 as a yearling: "Once I gave him a squeeze he was able to put the race to bed very easily. He came to life once I asked him."
Breakthrough for Brouder
It was an afternoon to remember for dual-purpose rider Gearoid Brouder who recorded his first winner as a trainer with 17-2 shot Astrophysicist, ridden by Shane Foley.
Brouder, 26, took out his trainer's licence five months ago and is based at the Curragh with four horses.
"We knew he was a good horse all along and that when he got soft or heavy ground it would suit him," he said.
Whip ban for Heffernan
Seamie Heffernan was among the winners after guiding Sweet November to success for John McConnell but there was a sting in the tail for the rider as he picked up a ten-day whip ban for his ride on While You're Up, runner-up in the 1m1½f handicap.
