Double the pleasure for Trigger camp as lookalike Trojan Horse makes his mark
Trojan Horse evoked memories of Double Trigger when landing the 1m1f novice named in honour of the legendary stayer for his owner Ron Huggins and trainer Mark Johnston.
The exciting two-year-old looked a spitting image of the 12-time Group winner when staying on from the front to repel the challenge of Three Street by one and three-quarter lengths.
Johnston's wife and assistant Deirdre told Racing TV: “Ron picked him partly for all the white he had, he’s very similar to Trigger.
“He’s by Ulysses so we gave him plenty of time. It was a very promising run at York [finished third], he ran really nicely and this was the next race for obvious reasons – seeing those colours again tugs at your heart strings.”
Double Trigger won the Gold Cup in 1995 and landed the Goodwood and Doncaster Cups three times in an illustrious career.
Mark Johnston voiced his frustration on Twitter at the amount of prize-money on offer, stating Trojan Horse had won only £30 more than Double Trigger had earned for winning the same race 28 years earlier. Trojan Horse took home £4,158.
Smart Mujtaba remains unbeaten
The William Haggas-trained Mujtaba made it three wins from as many runs when comfortably taking the mile handicap under jockey Dane O'Neill.
The well-bred son of Dubawi has been patiently handled, having made his debut in August, but looks to be progressing nicely.
