Beach boy Kinondo Kwetu cruises in to make it four in a row for happy England
Tuesday: Southwell
Kinondo Kwetu, named after a beach resort in Kenya, continued his imperious form by completing a four-timer for trainer Sam England.
After being held up behind the leaders early on, the six-year-old challenged at the third-last under Jonathan England, and found plenty to pull clear of Farouk De Cheneau in the 3m½f handicap chase.
Kinondo Kwetu was formerly trained by Charlie and Francesca Poste, and the trainer revealed the story behind his name.
She said: "It’s where they went on their honeymoon, so it’s got a nice meaning. It’s very important to them both. They started him and did very good preparation. He’s a very good jumper and they did a lot of work to get him to this point."
England is halfway to equalling her best tally of 19 winners but was keeping her feet on the ground.
She said: "I’m not exactly sure what to put the improvement down to, but it’s very pleasing indeed. I don’t know exactly where we go from here, but you just have to keep going. We don’t have any specific targets as yet, but we won’t aim too high and we certainly won’t be getting carried away."
Happy days
Red Happy strolled to victory in the 3m½f novice hurdle, scoring by 41 lengths with rider Tom Scudamore peering around to catch a glimpse of his trailing rivals in the distance.
The latest victory cemented David Pipe and Scudamore’s profitable partnership at Southwell where they have a 24 per cent strike-rate.
