A day after her intended runner in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas was withdrawn after rearing over in the paddock, Jane Chapple-Hyam enjoyed some better fortune when Saffron Beach finished an admirable second in the fillies equivalent.

The daughter of New Bay was in the firing line when the race began in earnest at the Bushes and mastered those around her up the middle, but was unsighted when Mother Earth rattled home on the far side.

The length defeat is the closest Adam Kirby has come to winning a Classic and the Group 1-winning jockey was understandably deflated afterwards.
