Aclaim may have run last race as stallion career beckons

Aclaim will not be seen out again this year following his landmark first Group 1 success in the Prix de la Foret at Chantilly on Sunday and a decision will be made about his long-term future in the coming week.

The son of Acclamation, who overcame fellow British raider So Beloved to give jockey Oisin Murphy and trainer Martyn Meade their first win at the highest level, may even have run his last race as connections ponder a possible stallion career for the four-year-old.

Winner of seven of his 15 races, Aclaim comprehensively reversed form with seventh-placed Brando on Sunday who he had previously chased home in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

Between times, Aclaim won the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster, but will not be taking up future engagements in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket (which he won last year) or the Group 1 Qipco British Champion Sprint at Ascot for which he is an 8-1 chance with Coral.

Meade said on Monday: "We'll see how Aclaim is when he arrives back from France tonight but it's job done as he's now a Group 1 winner and he won't be running again this year.

"He has a couple of entries but I would hate to run him again and get him beat somewhere so we'll give those a miss. He's been in the form of his life in recent weeks and we'll make a decision on whether he stays in training in the coming weeks.

"It could be that he retires and becomes a stallion now he has a Group 1 next to his name but we'll decide that later."
