708-1 five-timer for William Buick headlined by Jadoomi's Group 2 success
Saturday: Goodwood
Jadoomi helped William Buick secure a 708-1 five-timer when narrowly denying stablemate Finest Sound in the Group 2 Celebration Mile.
Many trainers may have forgotten what rain looked like when it began to fall on Thursday morning and among those grateful for some slightly testing ground were trainers Simon and Ed Crisford.
The four-year-old has winning form with heavy ground and, while good to soft at Goodwood hardly represents a slog, his connections believed some give in the ground would help to improve his chances.
And so it proved. Jadoomi faced only four rivals, including favourite Mutasaabeq, but his biggest challenge came from closer to home as he went stride for stride with Finest Sound before winning by a neck.
It was his second start of the season and first run in Britain since finishing third in a Listed contest at Newmarket in October. His only previous outing in Group company came as a two-year-old in 2020, when he finished third behind Van Gogh in the Group 1 Criterium International.
"He's got good form and was third at the highest level," said Buick. "He loved the ground and responded well when we got into a battle. It was a smooth race and he stuck his neck out well in the finish."
Buick began the day with victory in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes aboard Fairy Cross, who was shortened for the bet365 Fillies' Mile after finishing a length clear of Breege for trainer Charlie Appleby.
The two-year-old secured a hat-trick of juvenile Group-race victories for the yard in just eight days following Noble Style's Gimcrack victory and Silver Knott's comfortable success in Sandown's Solario Stakes.
Fairy Cross, who was runner-up in a Listed contest last month, was cut to 10-1 (from 12) by Betfair for the Group 1 bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket in October, and is also entered in the Rockfel Stakes.
"William gave her a lovely ride from the front," said Alex Merriam, Appleby's assistant trainer. "He said she appreciated getting her toe in. She could either stay at seven furlongs or step up to a mile. She showed a nice turn of foot, so Charlie may opt to stick at this trip."
"We haven't run too many two-year-old fillies so far this year and I think she's our only winner. At this stage she definitely stands out!"
Buick added to his tally with victory aboard Hoo Ya Mal in the March Stakes, his third Group success of the day and his 24th since March, before striking with Lunarscape in the 6f novice stakes for Eve Johnson Houghton and Secret Shadow in the 1m6f handicap.
11-1 shot Lunarscape finished a length and a half clear of favourite Keep Bidding to get off the mark at the second time of asking, while the Andrew Balding-trained Secret Shadow claimed her fourth career success by a short head.
Buick extended his lead over Hollie Doyle at the top of the jockeys' championship to 42 winners. He now has 115 victories as he bids for his first title, having been narrowly denied by Oisin Murphy last year.
