The application of blinkers can go one of two ways but the aid assisted Bonanza Sam in no uncertain terms as he gained a relentless front-running success at 40-1 in the 3m handicap chase.

The eight-year-old, owned by Gavin MacEchern and family and Nico and Sue Mills, was given a fine ride by conditional Alexander Thorne to prevail by two and a quarter lengths.

Trainer Jennifer Mason said: “We tried him in blinkers at home and he was a little sharper but didn’t disappear into the next village or anything, so we were thrilled to see him dominate like he did and Alex gave him a great ride.

“We’re a small team and extended our licence to ten boxes from six due to the point-to-point shutdown, so days like this are really special.”

Milan magic

Jockey Alan Johns took his record for Victor Dartnall to four winners from 13 rides aboard feature 3m novice handicap chase scorer Run To Milan.

The nine-year-old, backed into 4-1 joint favourite (from 14), returned from more than two years off to finish sixth at Fakenham last month and stepped up on that effort to triumph by 12 lengths.

Double delight

Colin Tizzard enjoyed his first winners of the month as the John Romans, Paul Taylor and Richard O’Dwyer-owned Killer Kane and Amarillo Sky struck in the 2m1f maiden hurdle and 2m1f handicap hurdle under Harry Cobden.

Nicky Henderson’s string are hitting peak form ahead of the Cheltenham Festival and Valsheda, his sole runner of the day, landed the 2m7f novice hurdle.
