All the right sorts of courses are racing on Thursday. Get ready for meetings at Sandown, Newbury, Doncaster and Leopardstown.

Admittedly, none of them will be hosting their biggest cards of the year, but black type hunters are catered for, with Sandown's Listed Star Stakes leading the afternoon diet.

Then in Ireland in the evening there will be a pair of seven-furlong Group 3s for juveniles. First there is the Silver Flash Stakes for fillies at 6.55, then 35 minutes later comes the Tyros Stakes. If that name means nothing to you, you are advised to check out the past winners. There surely cannot be a Group 3 in the world with a better recent roll of honour.

What's on today

The declarations for the King George will be revealed later this morning, with dual Oaks winner Enable expected to be among them. With the Derby types largely seen as substandard this year, she is seen as the main three-year-old hope over one and a half miles. Her clash with older horses will be keenly anticipated.

Entries for the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the Galway festival, thus the Galway Plate and Hurdle, will also be released.

If the Tyros has a challenger as the ultimate bellwether Group 3 it might well be the Gordon Stakes, won by Conduit, Harbinger, Ulysses and the like.

The common factor between the two races? Graduates from both tend to do their best work the following year. Given that the Pattern committee only takes end-of-year ratings into consideration, perhaps it is no surprise they remain Group 3s.
