One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday

Trainer

Roger Varian looks to have plenty of ammunition to go to war with this season and he holds a number of live chances at Newbury on Saturday.

Defoe, last seen finishing second in a Group 1 in Germany in November, has since been gelded and will be out to land his second John Porter Stakes (1.40) victory. Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's striking grey has won seven of his 14 starts and £334,940 in prize-money.

Varian also saddles Group 3 winner Yourtimeisnow, last seen finishing eighth in the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket, and she makes her second start over seven furlongs in the Fred Darling Stakes (2.10).

The trainer also unleashes a son of Kingman in the second division of the mile maiden (4.25). Roseman, who cost €650,000 as a yearling, is a half-brother to French winners Game Zone and Gone Solo and it will be interesting to note his progress this term.

Jockey

Tom Marquand has enjoyed a good start to the new season and has an interesting book of rides for Richard Hannon at Newbury.

Star Terms, a close third in the Prix Marcel Boussac in October, takes her chance in the Fred Darling and looks to hold a solid chance in the 15-strong line-up.

Marquand also gets the leg up on Urban Icon in the Watership Down Stud Greenham Stakes (2.40). The son of Cityscape won both his starts as a juvenile and now steps up in trip and grade for owner Michael Pescod.

Horse

The Greenham Stakes (2.40) is wide open following the defection of Too Darn Hot but there are still several Classic contenders in the line-up.

Hello Youmzain, a 50-1 shot for the 2,000 Guineas with William Hill, was last seen running out an eyecatching winner of a Group 2 in France and bids to add a second Group victory to his name before a potential shot at the Guineas.

Trainer Kevin Ryan, who has an exciting group of three-year-olds this season, thinks plenty of this son of Kodiac and another clear-cut win on Saturday would see his Newmarket odds shorten considerably.

Race

The CPMS Scottish Grand National (3.35) at Ayr looks a typically competitive renewal and a number of big guns stand their ground to land one of the last big prizes of the jumps season in Britain.

Ultima Handicap Chase winner Beware The Bear will bid to give trainer Nicky Henderson a first Scottish National success, while first-fence Aintree faller Vintage Clouds is out to better last year's third place.

Classic Chase victor Impulsive Star looks to make amends for disappointing at Cheltenham, while the up-and-coming Blue Flight mixes it with the old guard such as 2017 runner-up Cogry, Doing Fine and Carole's Destrier.
