The old gag is that it is called the Eider because you need webbed feet to win it. That is a harsh assessment, only partly borne out in reality, and strong evidence of the Eider being one of racing's answers to the cols mythiques of the Alps.

It is now ten years since Companero came home with only the vapour of his breath for company in a notorious running of the Eider, which is brought up now only because nothing like it has happened in the decade since.
