There have been only eight multiple winners of the Gold Cup and most of their names trip off the tongue to anyone remotely familiar with racing history, with the last five being Arkle, L'Escargot, Best Mate, Kauto Star, Al Boum Photo.
One of those names probably chimed a little flatter than the rest. Al Boum Photo has the disadvantage that he has not yet passed through time's filter, but if he were never to race again it would be near impossible to pin down how he would be remembered in 20 years' time.
