Mares have dominated Grade 1 hurdles on both sides of the Irish Sea in recent seasons and that has led plenty to question whether the 7lb allowance gives mares an unfair advantage at the top level. So does Galice Macalo just have to turn up to continue the mares' monopoly?

A closer analysis of the results achieved by all mares who competed in Grade 1 hurdles in Britain and Ireland since the start of 2016 (excluding races confined to mares) backs up the impression that females are enjoying a disproportionate advantage over male counterparts.
