Newmarket has been reeling this week from the shutdown of British racing, which will have an enormous economic impact on a town so dependent on the sport.

Yet at the same time there has been relief at an understanding that Sheikh Mohammed is set to maintain all his interests in British racing, despite the High Court in London last month finding he had threatened his former wife Princess Haya and abducted two of his daughters.

Most of the sheikh's investment is centred in Newmarket, the home of Godolphin, and more than 1,000 jobs in West Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire – as well as many more under the guise of his associates known as Rabbah Bloodstock – depend on his investment.
